Who are you? What do you do? Where do you do it?
William Oxley My business is Five Rise Enterprises Ltd-we have a Townhouse Hotel and a management consultancy.
Why did you start-up a business?
I was looking for a different challenge after a successful career in Corporate Life working for a large company. I wanted to be my own boss.
How (and when) did you start-up a business?
Started in 1994. Bought a run down hotel with borrowed money and our own savings and got on with it. My wife had experience in the industry and I had always fancied giving it a go.
What have been the biggest challenges in running your own business? How have these been overcome?
In the early days worrying about where the business was coming from and if we would be able to pay the bills. As the business grew just keeping up with the issues-recruiting staff, dealing with customers, checking the cash flow, negotiating with suppliers and tradesmen, managing on 6 hours a night sleep(if lucky) and marrying the hotel and the consultancy work.
What have been your greatest achievements in running your business?
Watching it grow and be successful. Being recognized by awards and customer feedback. Staying married through it all. Helping staff go on and start their businesses.
What would be your advice to any young aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don’t be afraid to have a go – be sure you are passionate about what you want to do. Get a good education-one that is fit for your purpose. Listen to others and learn to network like a demon.
